A notice period is the amount of advance warning you must give a supplier before cancelling or renegotiating a contract. If you miss this window, the contract typically auto-renews for another full term.
The notice period counts backwards from the contract renewal date. A 90-day notice period on a contract renewing 1 September means you must give notice by 2 June at the latest.
If the notice deadline has passed, the contract will typically auto-renew. Some suppliers will allow early exit on request, but you have much less leverage once you are inside the notice window.
Common notice periods are 30 days (software, hosting), 60 days (service contracts, telecom), and 90 days (IT support, managed services, commercial leases). Always check your specific contract terms.
